Review: Crispin Honey Crisp0

fact sheet

  • Style: Hard Apple Cider
  • Serving: Bottle
  • Volume: 22oz
  • ABV: 6.50%

Crispin Cider, a maker of “Super-Premium Natural Hard Apple Cider” from Minnesota, were extremely gracious in getting us started in reviewing Hard Ciders by sending a care package. The first one, and very first Hard Cider review, is from their Artisanal Reserve collection labeled Honey Crisp. Their 22oz bottle is labeled as “Smooth over ice with organic honey” and stands at 6.5% ABV.

After researching this cider, it was evident why I didn’t get a robust crystal clear body like I’m used to. Crispin describes their Cloudy Filtration™ process which intentionally leaves residual natural apple wine sediment at the bottom of each bottle. The body was semi-cloudy with a very pale yellow color, reminiscent of some water splashed with lemonade. The carbonation bubbles quickly stopped after the pour and obviously we’ve got no lasting bubbles or head.

The initial nose aroma was wonderfully sweet and light. Scents of honey, lemon, orange oil, beeswax and citronella are prominent and well balanced to create a juicy, sweet and fruity aroma. The body is fairly light and immediately brings the bubbly carbonation back that was missing from the appearance. On the palate up front is raw honeycomb, granny smith apple and some wild ’sour’ yeast. The finish is quite dry and leaves a bit of a boozy cling on your tongue. I think the overall dryness of the finish leaves the palate wide open and susceptible to more of the ‘hot’ flavors.

For sitting down and enjoying my first Hard Cider that I’m reviewing, it was a pleasure. If Crispin’s other ciders are anything like their Honey Crisp, I’m in for a real treat. These are the perfect complement for really an all-season day, though I see myself thoroughly enjoying these on the cool summer and spring days.
