Review: Fegley’s Brew Works Devious0
fact sheet
- Style: Pumpkin Ale
- Serving: Bottle
- Volume: 750ml
- ABV: 9.00%
I was browsing my local beer selection recently and came across the Fegley’s Brew Works Devious, an Imperial Pumpkin Ale, made by Allentown Brew Works. In the past, we’ve done other Allentown Brew Works beers: the Hop’solutely, and the Monkey Wrench (brewed at the Bethlehem location). The Devious comes in line with the “Imperial” tag, with a stellar 9.0% ABV.
This 750ml corked and caged bottle pours with a quickly dissipating tan head, fizzy like soda. Beneath, the body was auburn, with a touch of rose-tint, leaving virtually no lacing. Evident after the pour are the incredible aromas permeating off the body. In my opinion, this is truly a great aroma for what I want to see in a Pumpkin Ale; nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and sweet malt. The aromas play well with each other with one not being more overpowering than the other. When there are so many delicious flavors going on, balance is key. There seems to be a nice hint of molasses as well to make this Pumpkin Ale smell more like a homemade pumpkin pie.
There was a mild tartness on the palate from the hops but the earthy tones and spices balance the beer really well. The amount of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin are balanced and compliment each other quite nicely. Finishing the mouth, a slight twinge of alcohol is noticeable, though it definitely is not a hindrance to the overall quality of the flavor profile.
The Devious reminds me of a fresh baked pumpkin pie in beer, which is exactly what I’m looking for, for my Thanksgiving beer. This Imperial Pumpkin Ale just about edges out the Southampton Pumpkin Ale as my favorite I’ve tried this season. If you’re in the Fall seasonal beer mood, I highly recommend you try a bottle of the Devious, if it’s in your area.
