Review: Dogfish Head Sah’tea0

It feels like it has been months since Passion Beer presented a new Dogfish Head review. So, when I was checking out the beer selection at my local grocery store this weekend, my eyes got drawn to a bottle of Dogfish Head’s Sah’Tea. That being said, Dogfish is really good at giving a fair description on the bottle, as this is made from Chai Tea and Juniper berries. I was leery at first as I am not a huge fan of Chai Tea but figured I’d give it a shot.

The beer poured a nice clear, amber color from the 750ml bottle with a nice lasting head. The initial reaction for me was the color. I’m not a Chai Tea drinker and was expecting a darker color to the body, although it was on the contrary; a crisp, light amber color. There was a moderate amount of carbonation which came through when I tasted it.

The aromas on the Dogfish brews are always unique and this is no exception. My sister brews her own Chai Tea, and this smell brought back strikingly familiar scents. The cinnamon accents hit hard followed by a sweet malt character. The beer smelt like a fragrant bunch of herbs, which was particularly inviting and reminded me of one of those “country” stores (you know what I mean, right?).

The taste has a nice blast of juniper spice to it with an easy amount of carbonation coming with it. It was well balanced with the spices from the Chai Tea, making the Sah’tea go down really easily. The beer has a bite to it with the balanced spices and herbs from the Juniper berries and Chai tea, and finished a bit sharply on the palate.

This is definitely a good and unusual offering from Dogfish Head. Is it one that is a must have when it comes to Dogfish Head for me? Not really. I would get it again if I couldn’t get my hands on any of their other quality brews. Don’t let that turn you off this beer though, it just wasn’t my “cup of tea” *rimshot*. If you don’t mind the cinnamon accents from the Chai Tea (which seem off in a beer), you will enjoy this beer a lot more than what I did.

Overall: 8/10
