Review: Sly Fox Route 113 IPA0

fact sheet

  • Style: IPA
  • Serving: Can
  • Volume: 12oz
  • ABV: 7.00%

Sly Fox has started to can yet another one of their beers, with the newest addition to the canning line being the Route 113 IPA. The 113 has previously been available in bottles and can still normally be found on tap at the Sly Fox brewpubs in Phoenixville and Royersford, PA. I was very excited when I learned that the 113 was going to be canned. It’s a good IPA and there is just something cool about good beer coming in a can, especially from such a small brewery.

The Route 113 pours a slightly hazy, brownish-amber color. The head is a nice creamy, off-white and about 1.5 fingers in height. The beer retains its head well and leaves a fair amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is pleasantly sweet, mostly coming from the malt, with some citrus and hoppy spice coming through as well as some other floral notes. There is nothing too big or overwhelming on the nose, it was a bit sweeter than I expected.

The sweetness is toned down in the flavor of the beer compared to the nose. A decent amount of malt keeps the bitterness from the hops from becoming overwhelming. The hop flavors are mostly earthy notes, pine, and a bit of spice. There is very little citrus to speak of.

The most interesting part of the Route 113 is how the nose and taste play off of each other. One sweet, one not so much, one hoppy, the other malty. Smell as you drink on this one. Overall a good middle of the road American IPA.

Overall: 7.5/10
